On Friday, British singer and multi-instrumentalist Sting performed at the Prague Exhibition Grounds. He left the best impression and at the end promised to see each other again soon.
As an experienced fighter, Sting knows well that hits, not new songs, make a concert, and he also based it on material from the eighties and nineties. The old classic Synchronicity II was ideal for opening the show and getting people moving. It is not the most famous hit that is saved for the end, but it is a fast, understandable song with a strong melody.
The great If I Ever Lose My Faith in You followed with a very strong chorus that forced fans to sing along with Sting. Spirits in the Material World, the jazzy Englishman in New York or Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic only confirmed that Sting can serve nothing but hits.
Through Walking on the Moon, So Lonely or Desert Rose, he worked his way to the "golden fund" in the form of the ballad Roxanne, which he originally enriched with a funky intermezzo, which naturally transitioned into a cover version of the soul classic Ain't No Sunshine. Sting did not play slavishly like on the record, but on the other hand, he always cut off the jamming in time so as not to tire the audience. The band did not show off, they played precisely and basically modestly.
Sting's singing was supposed to stand out, and that is what happened. The vocally confident singer enjoyed every note, intoned flawlessly and radiated ordinary musician's joy.
The sound avoided interruptions, by rock concert standards it was actually intimate and very clean. The same goes for the effects, which were limited to a few lights and two ordinary screens on the sides. As if Sting was saying that he had such a strong repertoire that he did not have to act like a monkey.
The encore with Every Breath You Take a Fragile really gave it a go.
