Police let the songs speak...
Five thousand people escaped into another world at the Brighton Centre last night.
They were lost in a sea of hysteria brought on by a staggering 100-minute performance by the group The Police.
The floor of the centre was turned into a swaying mass of bodies as thousands of fans devoured the mind-blowing music of this superhuman trio.
From the moment they appeared on stage to the end of their second encore, Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers performed like demons.
They hardly had time to catch their breath between numbers... packing 17 songs into their exhausting act.
The Police are a group who don't need to rely on stage gimmicks for effect. There is no fancy choreography on stage, no lasers and few special lighting effects.
They have so many hits behind them that all they have to do is blast out one number after the other and their mere presence on stage is enough to electrify any atmosphere.
Police fans certainly got their money's worth last night. All the popular hits were there. 'Roxanne', 'Can't Stand Losing You', 'So Lonely', 'Message in a Bottle', 'Walking on the Moon' and 'Don't Stand So Close'.
But they didn't rest their act solely on past glories. 'Spirits in the Material World', 'Hungry for You', 'Demolition Man' and 'One World', from their latest album 'Ghost in the Machine', were all included.
It is impossible to label a group like The Police. Their music is a strange mixture of rock and reggae, ranging from soft, haunting melodies to fast, raunchy numbers.
The fans loved them. They threw their clothes on stage at them and showered them with roses.
