Sting goes down a storm in Costa Rica...

Sting, the ex-singer of The Police demonstrated last night why he is one of the great rock performers.

When Sting took to the stage at the Imperial Festival at 8.10 last night, the talking was over and the Guácima was ready to burst. The mere presence of the the Police ex-singer was enough to ignite the enthusiastic crowd which exploded with delirium.

The artists that had performed earlier in the day, including the members of Rasmus and those from Jamirioquai's band, left their dressing rooms in order to come and listen to the British singer and caused a tremendous uproar in the press room when they arrived unexpectedly. The "ticos" enjoyed the legendary perfomer and it seems that the years have treated Sting well because his energy on stage was magical and hypnotized everyone.

Shortly before his performance, the Englishman met president elect Oscar in his dressing room. It was a private meeting, nobody knows what was said and whether he could speak English with Sting but the meeting took place.

This weekend's concert was perhaps one of the best concerts that Costa Ricans have enjoyed in the last few decades due to the quality of musicians - although some like Héctor The Father, Belanova and Miranda did not warm up the audience very successfully - the organisation and the venue where safety was much in evidence helped guarantee a good spectacle.

The day passed calmly with the crowd behaving themselves and the spectacle was impressive - happy faces, men with glasses of beer in hand, women in jeans with bare navels and eyes that followed them, music, and helicopters flying all over the place. At the end, the director of the Costa Rica brewery, Ramon Mendiola, promised a second festival could "happen within a year".

The legendary ex-singer of the Police strode on to the scene elegantly dressed in black in the best European style. From the first notes of his unique voice, the crowd were driven crazy with at least one fan fainting. But for her, as well as the thousands that got to see him, the delay was worth the wait. When Sting opened his show with 'Message In A Bottle' the atmosphere could not be bettered, and from the start you could see he had a taste for the show and his energy burst through. Unsurprising, because this concert marked the beginning of his world-wide 'Broken Music' tour. There were presents too for the "ticos" that were present. After the greeting "Buenas noches" and "Gracias Costa Rica", Sting continued with his hits, 'Walking On The Moon', 'If I Ever Lose My Faith In You', 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic', 'Desert Rose' and 'Roxanne' were some of the most popular songs with the crowd. After a while, Sting warmed up and removed his black coat revealing a tight fitting grey t-shirt that showed off his well preserved figure. Nobody could ever say that he looked to be fiftyish years old.

Between shouts, music, and screaming Sting went on to give one of the best concerts Costa Rica has seen.

Sting fue dinamita...

Cualquier calificativo se queda corto: Sting hizo explotar el autódromo La Guácima anoche. El británico cerró como un maestro el bien logrado Festival Imperial. Con razón él es una leyenda del rock.

Grandes hay muchos, pero las leyendas son escasas. Y fue eso, una leyenda del rock lo que miles de ticos presenciaron anoche. Sting fue el protagonista absoluto, un músico que demostró por qué el calificativo de leyenda le queda como anillo al dedo.

El cantautor británico dio un conciertazo, una presentación que a los dichosos presentes difícilmente se les borrara de su" "disco duro". Por espacio de una hora y cuarenta minutos, Sting recetó recargadas versiones de los clásicos que forjó con The Police y los "piezones" que luego creó por su cuenta.

Así, a lo grande, fue como se despidió la primera edición del Festival Imperial, un concierto al estilo de los grandes festivales de las naciones más pudientes del continente.

Según los organizadores, sumando el público de ambos días, cerca de 40.000 personas se apuntaron a ser parte del festival. Sobre si habrá una segunda edición, los voceros de la Cervecería Costa Rica se mostraron cautos, aunque esperanzados en que lo de este fin de semana bien pueda tornarse, quizás, en una franquicia.

Antes de que el exlíder de The Police hiciera su show, ayer,por el escenario montado en el autódromo La Guácima, pasó un pésimo Héctor The Father, los divertidos argentinos de Miranda!, los muy aplaudidos ticos de Malpaís y la explosiva banda finlandesa de The Rasmus.

¡Arriba The Rasmus! La actuación de la banda finlandesa The Rasmus tuvo una situación importante cuando se trata de irse en vivo: tocó sin haber hecho prueba de sonido. Y sonó nítida, acertada, fuerte dentro de lo melódico que su estilo le permite.

Al cuarteto no le llegaron sus instrumentos, así que en Tiquicia movieron cielo y tierra para conseguirlos pero no con tanto tiempo como para tener la mañana para probar sonido. Pocos músicos se atreven a subirse a un escenario con esa dificultad de por medio y mucho menos se atreven a echar mano de un instrumento ajeno porque esos "chunches" son sensibles como las personas y tienen su genio y sus mañas también.

No por nada Eicca Toppinen, el cerebro de Apocalyptica, le tiene afecto a The Rasmus. La banda se entregó en el escenario. Lauri, el cantante, tuvo el tino de hacer conexión a la tica: en Night After Night fue modificando la letra al insertar de vez en cuando las palabras "Costa Rica". Bien jugado.

A The Rasmus lo corearon que dio gusto y le pidieron más, así que los muchachos hicieron el himno de Finlandia, In My Life y Don?t Let Go, un temita melancólico ideal para ser recordado con afecto.

Se abrazaron frente al público y Lauri dijo: "esta noche, ¡Sting!" Ya lo habían confesado en la conferencia de prensa: ellos verían el concierto del inglés y, si podían, correrían desnudos detrás de él. Fue una broma, por supuesto.

Police. y más. A las 8 p. m., en punto, la locura se desató. Bajo en mano, Sting volvió, por tercera ocasión, a cantarle a los ticos. Su arranque no pudo ser más poderoso: tocó la muy recordada 'Message in a Bottle'. Ese tema dejó claro que The Police sería parte vital del menú.

La banda de Sting fue pura potencia. Cuatro hombres -el propio Sting, los guitarristas Dominic Miller y Lyle Workman y el genial baterista Abe Laboriel Jr.- bastaron y sobraron para "roquear" la casa.

La gente, al oírlos, estaba enloquecida, mientras bombazos como 'Synchronicity II'; 'Walking on the Moon'; 'I Ever Lose My Faith in You'; 'Walking on the Moon', 'King of Pain' y 'All This Time' se sucedían.

Siempre sonriente y con intervenciones en español, Sting saltó y le sacó el jugo a su cumplidor bajo. 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic'. griterío., 'Fields of Gold'. más gritos..., su cover de 'A Day in a Life', de los Beatles... euforia..., 'Every Breath You Take'... locura absoluta, 'Roxanne'... ni para qué contarles, la gente no se lo creía.

Y claro, elpúblico pedía más, así que Sting complació y terminó su presentación ya pasadas las 9:40 p.m. Todo el mundo quedó más que feliz. Así terminó el Festival Imperial. El buen sabor de boca será difícil de borrar.
