Been a fan since: 1983 – I adore all The Police albums. In 1983 I spent the summer with my younger brother and parents living for almost three months in St. Andrews, Scotland. My father is a Presbyterian minister, and we went as a part of a summer sabbatical/exchange (a whole bunch of Presbyterian ministers and their families living in the dorms at the University). That event / summer was memorable for many reasons, but one of which was among the teenagers in the group (about 4 us), we had one walk-man cassette player and two tapes we shared – one of which was The Police, Synchronicity and so we passed it around and listened to it over and over and over (it’s still one of my favorites). Songs and memories are so intertwined.
Favourite Sting song: I could not possibly pick just one, but some of my favorites are: Bring on The Night, Synchronicity, History Will Teach Us Nothing, If You Love Someone Set Them Free, Shape of My Heart, and Send Your Love.
Favourite Police song: Bring On The Night - I never tire of hearing it and it’s timeless to me. I love introducing my kids to these songs.
Favourite Sting album: Dream of the Blue Turtles. My best friend and I drove to Houston to see the concert. It was the first concert I’d ever been to, and the songs on that album (and many others) got me inspired to read Interview with A Vampire and learn more about Jimi Hendrix (Little Wing), and I started following jazz. And a decade ago, when my son was very young (elementary school), he came home one day and presented me with a ceramic clay blue turtle he had made in art class (when he had no idea who Sting was, how much I love Sting and that song and album…and of course I smiled to myself about that… it was a sweet nod to synchronicity).
Favourite Police album: All of them are wonderful, but if I had to pick one it would be Synchronicity. When I remember all the places I went in St. Andrews, all over the town that summer (the sun being up until almost midnight and staring out at the North Sea… when I hear any song from that album I think so fondly of that summer.
Most memorable concert: I’ll be a bit prescient and say it’s going to be the one I’m going to tonight at Red Rocks. Red Rocks is such an iconic place, it’s stunning and I have been lucky enough to see Sting in concert when I was 15, then again in college when I was 19, and now all these years later at 55.
Eliot Sumner will join the Sting 3.0 Tour for the show on October 16 at Hard Rock Live in Rockford, IL. Tickets are available from https://sting.com/pages/tour
