Arresting performance as Police have a ball...
IT would be easy to lapse into puns and say The Police gave an arresting performance, at their "cell-out" performance at King George's Hall, Blackburn, last night. But such levity would detract from the fact that they put on one of the best con- certs Blackburn has seen for a long time. It would be very difficult to find anything to fault in their set. Their material was consistently strong and their playing was impeccable.
They played a well- balanced blend of their earlier driving rock with a distinct new wave bias, and their own brand of reggae, which is making them so popular at the moment.
Their music and performance oozed class and the depth of sound they man- aged to achieve was a constant source of mystery.
Although the favourites were the singles "Roxanne' and "Can't Stand Losing You," the rest of their songs had the same drive and style.
Their musicianship was also beyond reproach with former Curved Air drummer Stewart Copeland putting in an imaginative but solid performance guitarist Andy Summers playing some neat and very effective guitar and Sting playing a vital "anchorman" role on bass.
His high pitched, powerful voice (a cross between Andy Fairweather Lowe and Bob Marley) gives the band their unique sound.
If the reaction of the capacity crowd is anything to go by, The Police will not be going short of a few coppers for a while.
