A Ball for The Police fans...
The Police may have started out on the punk circuit but they've moved on.
They are a no-nonsense, hard-hitting, highly talented threesome with a string of hits and a top selling album, Outlandos d'Amour, behind them.
Roxanne and I Can't Stand Losing You received a rapturous response from the huge audience at De Montfort Hall last night and their latest single, Message In A Bottle, looks certain to make the hat-trick.
A mixed set of reggae and rock showed their influences to be wide.
Numbers off the latest album, such as Walking On The Moon, display a fine control and masterly musicianship that should make this a winner too.
Sting's high-pitched voice has a crystal quality strongly reminiscent of Yes vocalist Jon Anderson.
After the sweet sounds of the sixties and the sour seventies with bands like this around we can look forward to the enlightened eighties and The Police will surely be there. Support group Fashion weren't too hot, but last night's enthusiastic fans had no disappointments from the band they'd paid to see.
The Police gave them a ball.
