Smash-hit return...
Sting bounded on stage at the Dome, Brighton, last night looking fighting fit.
"Last time I was in Brighton I was smashing windows,' he admitted. "But I've calmed down a bit since then."
"Boo," shouted the audience.
"But not that much," he added quickly. And we were off.
Sting is lead singer with The Police and he was smashing windows as the star of the film 'Quadrophenia', set in Brighton.
The band were treated to some pre-season Quadromania at their Dome concert the film has not yet reached Sussex.
I had fallen for the film publicity and was expecting a thin-lipped mean-looking Mod. Instead there was a healthy, clean-cut guy with a big grin, looking like an athletic David McCallum.
The band produce a powerful blend of pop rock and reggae. Sting undoubtedly the star has a strong, clear voice of considerable range.
The band, with Andy Summers on guitar and Stewart Copeland on drums, make effective use of echo, and they sang their best. songs including 'Roxanne' and 'Can't Stand Losing You'. They also played numbers from their forthcoming A&M album.
There was standing room only at the front as the crowd flooded towards the stage, and the band put a lot of energy into pleasing their Brighton fans.
