Elite rock band on Calypso beat are just the ticket...
I was proceeding in a southerly direction towards the Granby Halls last night when a stranger approached me. "Got a spare ticket mate?" He was one of the unlucky ones.
Tickets for The Police ball in Leicester had been snapped up ages ago and no wonder. The rock trio with the clever calypso beat are very big business indeed. They have joined the elite of rock bands who can now almost guarantee a Number One record every time they bring out a single.
The Granby Halls are not the best of places to perform live, but lead singer Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stuart Copeland were on good form. And the fans were quick to respond.
The distinctive twang signalled the countdown to their hypnotic 'Walking On the Moon', with Sting's plaintive vocals ringing out around the halls.
But while they reeled off tracks from the 'Regatta de Blanc' and 'Outlandos D'Amour' albums, it was an early hit, 'Roxanne', that proved the high spot of the concert and showed that Police were "in good nick".
With police officers keeping a watchful eye on proceedings, while the spotlights picked out The Police, it brought a whole new meaning to the phrase: "May the force be with you!"
Their name may have started them off with raised eyebrows but The Police are more than just a gimmick. They showed ample evidence of playing well on stage, as well as in the recording studio.
The show never reached great heights and they have probably played better, but their Leicester fans willingly gave themselves up to The Police. It seemed the sensible thing to do.
