The Police: New Wave Freshness...
The appearance of The Police, an England-based aggregation, at Davidson College's Love Auditorium Friday night marked the arrival of new wave on the local music scene.
Those in power at Davidson College Union could not have chosen more appropriate emissaries.
New wave is a form of rhythmic, electrified music which recently surfaced in major cities in the Northeast. The Police are major exponents of this form, combining the skilful use of technological innovations in sound manipulation with engaging reggae-influenced vocals.
They do the job in a workman-like manner. One wouldn't expect a three-piece group to provide the variety of effects and tonal quality that the Police so effortlessly reveal. They are obviously fresh and ready to have a go with any tempo, drawing on various influences through the multiple-textured history of rock music.
They've got a song, "Roxanne," currently being heard on local FM radio, which is in no way representative of their considerable talents. Perhaps a better selection for single release in the future would be the song, "Walking On the Moon," a lovely showpiece.
An entire concert gives them the opportunity to run the gamut of their styles, though, and if you are in the mood for something experimental and new to your boogied-out ears, WDAV (Davidson's radio station, 89.9 FM) will be rebroadcasting the concert plus an inter- view with the band tonight at 11 p.m.
