Sting celebrates 25 years as a solo artist, a career that began after the end of his time with The Police. His first tours of major venues included Gijón, specifically El Molinón stadium. It was the era of the so-called "big concerts," which brought the cream of the pop/rock scene to Asturias.
Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, "Sting," was then promoting his album "Soul Cages." The El Molinón show took place 20 years ago, when the former The Police frontman was still in the early stages of his tours. He drew 28,000 people to the Sporting stadium, a far cry from the numbers achieved by Tina Turner, who was the first to perform there.
The crowd took a while to get going, but quickly found their rhythm with the hits of his former band. It's no coincidence that 20 years ago, his solo career was just a project, and the musician relied heavily on his Police songs. Back then, no one would have forgiven him for leaving out "Every Breath You Take," "Roxanne," or "Message in a Bottle," to name a few. However, Sting brought a pleasant surprise to the fans on that tour: his version of the Hendrix classic "Purple Haze," a track that was a delightful surprise. "Purple Haze" also featured Dominic Miller, a guitarist who was one of the heavyweights in Sting's backing band.
Of course, back then Sting had a full head of hair and still retained that "Police vibe" that had brought him so much fame. He also had his run-ins with the press. He didn't want to make any statements, and the journalists wanted a headline. The usual fight. The tension reached its peak when he was eating at the Old Mill.
It was 20 years ago, when Sting was celebrating five years as a solo artist and dominating the world stage.
This anniversary is also being celebrated by his record company with a compilation album summarising his career, from "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" to the live performance in Berlin. It's a triple CD with a DVD, book, and photos. "Sting: 25 Years," as the box set is called, includes 45 songs, iconic tracks from his career such as "You Still Touch Me," "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying," "If You Love Somebody Set Them Fee," and "All This Time," the latter of which opened that concert 20 years ago (June 1991) at El Molinón stadium.
