Sopot, PL
Opera Leśna

Sting has once again captivated the Tricity. Over two hours of smash hits at the Forest Opera…

The music legend returned to Sopot and proved once again that his iconic status is no accident. During his concert at the Forest Opera, Sting took the audience on a journey spanning more than four decades of his career, delivering his greatest hits from his days with The Police and his solo work. In doing so, he demonstrated that, despite being over 70, he still impresses with his vocal form and stage energy.

Few artists manage to consistently fill the world’s largest arenas and amphitheatres for decades while remaining creatively active and authentic. Sting belongs to this elite group. Since the late 1970s, the British musician has steadily built his reputation as a key figure on the global music scene - first as the leader of The Police, and later as a solo artist who moves with equal ease between rock, pop, jazz, and world music.

The Tricity holds a special place in the artist's touring schedule. Sting regularly visits Gdańsk and Sopot, always drawing a full house. He has performed three times at the Ergo Arena - in 2011, 2018, and 2024 - and also played the Forest Opera in 2016. On Wednesday evening, after a ten-year hiatus, he returned to this unique venue, where the acoustics and atmosphere perfectly complement his repertoire.

From the very first minutes, it was clear that this would be a truly memorable evening. As the opening notes of "Message in a Bottle" rang out, the audience was instantly won over.

The setlist prepared for the evening was a classic "best of" collection, serving as a retrospective journey through the artist's career. Sting skilfully alternated between The Police's repertoire and compositions from his solo albums. There was no shortage of classics such as "Englishman in New York," "Fields of Gold," "Shape of My Heart," "Desert Rose," and "When We Dance." The audience responded with equal enthusiasm to The Police tracks - "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Walking on the Moon," "So Lonely," and, of course, "Every Breath You Take," which - as is tradition - proved to be one of the evening's highlights.

Alongside his biggest hits, Sting also made a few nods to his most devoted fans. The setlist included tracks rarely performed these days - such as "King of Pain" and "Can't Stand Losing You" - which elicited reactions just as enthusiastic as those for the most obvious concert classics. Moments like these demonstrate that, despite the passing years, the artist can still surprise his audience and does not limit himself to merely playing a mandatory roster of hits.

Indeed, it would be hard to find another artist with such a diverse musical journey. Over the years, Sting has constantly broadened his artistic horizons - moving from the new wave rock and reggae of his Police days through ambitious pop and jazz explorations to projects inspired by classical music, folk, and world music. Consequently, his concerts are not merely a sentimental trip down memory lane but also a reminder of what a versatile creator he remains.

Yet, with Sting, the power of a concert doesn't rely solely on well-known, beloved songs. For years, the British artist has also drawn crowds with a charisma that shows no signs of fading. On one hand, he exudes the elegance, composure, and class typical of a British gentleman; on the other, he possesses a relaxed stage presence, a twinkle in his eye, and a boyish charm that continues to captivate audiences. A few smiles, gestures toward the crowd, or brief glances from the stage were enough to spark enthusiastic reactions from the female fans in the front rows.

There is something else, too, that sets Sting apart. Even though the Forest Opera was packed to capacity, the atmosphere felt intimate - as if Sting were playing for a small group of friends. Throughout the evening, he remained keenly aware of the audience right in front of the stage. He truly saw the people he was singing for; he might engage a passing young girl, comment on a dancing couple, or notice a banner held by fans in the front rows. These small gestures fostered a sense of personal connection between the artist and the audience, even in such a large venue. It is in moments like these that a performer’s experience and class truly shine: despite decades spent on the world’s biggest stages, Sting approaches every concert with the same level of dedication.

Although he is 74, time has been kind to him. Sting maintained a pace throughout the show that many much younger performers would envy - he remained incredibly active, moving freely across the stage and holding the audience's attention, while songs followed one another with barely a pause, free from lengthy interludes or streams of chatter between tracks. It is an almost old-fashioned way of performing, characteristic of "old-school" rock artists who have long known that music remains the best form of dialogue with an audience - not flashy animations, pyrotechnics, or spectacular special effects.

At the Forest Opera, Sting was joined on stage by his long-time collaborator, guitarist Dominic Miller, and Chris Maas, the former drummer for Mumford & Sons. This modest trio forms the core of the "Sting 3.0" project, with which the artist has been touring since last year. This time, Sting consciously eschewed elaborate arrangements and a large backing band, returning to a rawer format reminiscent of the energy he cultivated years ago with The Police. Although many of his compositions were originally conceived with rich instrumentation - featuring keyboards, saxophone, harmonica, or clarinet - there is no room for such embellishments on this tour. Simplicity reigns, driven by the consistent principle that sometimes less is more. That alone suffices to fill the Forest Opera with sound for nearly two hours, leaving the audience fully satisfied.

The same applies to the concert’s presentation. There are no superfluous flourishes or attempts to distract from what matters most. There was the voice, the instruments, and the songs known to millions of listeners worldwide for decades. And it turned out that was more than enough. For when an artist of this calibre takes the stage, he needs no pyrotechnics to captivate an audience of thousands; simply singing is enough.

Equally important, during the Sopot concert, it was impossible not to feel that Sting still derives genuine joy from performing. Even though he has played his greatest hits countless times on stages across the globe, there was no trace of routine or mere repetition. Every song was performed with the same level of commitment as if it had been written just a few months ago.

The British artist smiled at the audience; though he spoke little, he came across as a performer who simply loves being on stage. It is a quality that cannot be rehearsed or manufactured - you either have it or you don’t. In Sting’s case, that very naturalness and the genuine joy of sharing music with the crowd are among the reasons he has remained a concert phenomenon for decades.

After the main set, the audience was reluctant to let him leave the stage. For the encore, he first performed the timeless "Roxanne" before closing with "Fragile." That final song proved to be the evening's most beautiful highlight. In an intimate, emotionally charged atmosphere, it served as a reminder of why the British star has remained one of the world's most acclaimed artists for so long. He not only creates songs that have stood the test of time but also performs them with the same sincerity and class he displayed years ago.

An artist who has sold over a hundred million records, won dozens of major music awards, and secured his place in the history of popular music, he still knows how to captivate an audience. The crowd at the Opera Leśna saw once again that some songs - and some artists - simply never age.

Sting returned to the Forest Opera after 10 years. Here is what the "STING 3.0" tour concert looked like...

On this hot summer evening, the Forest Opera in Sopot hosted one of contemporary music's biggest stars. On Wednesday, June 24, alongside hits from The Police's repertoire, Sting performed key compositions from his own - equally rich - solo career.

Sting opted for a minimalist format. Joining him on stage were guitarist Dominic Miller - his longtime collaborator - and drummer Chris Maas, known for his work with Mumford & Sons, among others. Just three people on stage (hence "STING 3.0"), yet that was all it took. After all, it is not the first time Sting has excelled in a musical trio...

True to British punctuality, Sting took the stage just minutes past 8:00 PM. He kicked things off with a hit: The Police's "Message in a Bottle." Needless to say, the audience instantly leapt to their feet upon hearing the opening notes of the song. The setlist included a total of nine tracks recorded with The Police, such as "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "King of Pain," "Can't Stand Losing You," and "Every Breath You Take."

After a high-energy start, the concert shifted into a calmer phase. Sting invited the audience to his English home amidst the "fields of barley" by performing the moving "Fields of Gold," maintaining that reflective mood for the next few songs.

Although the artist said little between songs, he still maintained a strong connection with the audience. He reacted spontaneously to banners, accepted flowers from fans, waved to children passing by the stage, and acknowledged couples dancing to slower songs. He also expressed his delight at returning to the Forest Opera (having last performed there in 2016), emphasising just how beautiful he finds the venue.

Indeed, it would be hard to imagine a better location for the event. An amphitheatre surrounded by dense forest, a warm summer evening, and an almost intimate atmosphere - everything came together perfectly.

The tempo picked up again towards the end of the concert. "Every Breath You Take" closed the main set, and when "Roxanne" rang out during the encore, the audience immediately surged toward the stage. However, the show concluded with the subtle, emotional - albeit perhaps too slow for a finale - "Fragile."

The "Sting 3.0" tour concert was a performance marked by the class of a seasoned musician, yet also by warmth and an enduring passion for music. There was no elaborate stage production - nor was it needed. The evening’s strengths lay in the polished compositions, the carefully selected musicians, and Sting himself, who remains in excellent form at the age of 74!

Sting at the Forest Opera...

Crowds of fans, a concert lasting over two hours, and a setlist packed with his greatest hits. On Wednesday, June 24, Sting performed at the Forest Opera in Sopot, demonstrating that—despite the passing years—he remains one of the most charismatic artists on the global music scene.

The British artist performed in an intimate three-piece line-up. He once again proved that quality speaks for itself; there was no need for pyrotechnics, multimedia displays, or the kind of excess that often overwhelms modern concerts and distracts from the music.

The concert lasted over two hours and served as a retrospective journey through nearly five decades of the artist's musical career. The audience heard tracks from his solo career alongside the greatest classics by The Police.

The setlist included hits such as "Englishman in New York," "Fields of Gold," "Every Breath You Take," "Message in a Bottle," and "Roxanne." The audience's enthusiasm was palpable from the opening bars of almost every song.

The atmosphere at the Forest Opera was special from the very first minutes of the concert. The packed amphitheatre responded energetically to both the biggest hits and the less obvious selections from the musician's repertoire.

Sting required no elaborate stage design or special effects. The performance's greatest strengths were the compositions themselves, the superb execution, and the direct connection with the audience. The artist received repeated rounds of applause, and the concert's finale met with an exceptionally warm reception.
